Bac Giang Deaf School Supports AI Innovation at VSL2025 Workshop

Bac Giang, 25 April 2025 – The Bac Giang Deaf School hosted a two-day workshop on 24–25 April 2025, contributing to the Vietnamese Sign Language: 2025 Collection (VSL2025) Phase 1 project. Organized by the Australia-Vietnam Strategic Technologies Centre, the event engaged over 10 students, three teachers, and director board members in supporting the digital transition in the field through AI technology.

The workshop facilitated the recording of 3,250 sign videos (250 signs each), 650 sentence videos (50 sentences each), and 10 conversation videos by 13 dedicated signers across approximately five sessions. These efforts contribute to a national VSL dataset aimed at developing AI-powered tools to enhance accessibility, education, and communication for Vietnam’s deaf community.

Participants expressed enthusiasm for their contributions. AVSTC project volunteer, Dao X. Huy, 20, shared, “Recording signs for AI feels like I’m helping deaf kids learn more easily in the future.” Teacher Phan T Binh added, “AI integration in education opens new opportunities for our students.” Director board member Nguyen V. Hue emphasized, “This project supports future generations by leveraging technology to equip disadvantaged people.”

Aligned with Bac Giang’s digital transformation efforts, the workshop’s data will be utilised at the AVSTC research works towards new digital tools for deaf schools. The event strengthens the role of deaf people in VSL2025, setting the stage for Phase 2 expansion to other areas of Vietnam, supporting a tech-empowered future for Vietnam’s deaf community.
